GREENVILLE (CBSDFW.COM) – A K9 officer in Greenville has died.

The Greenville Police Department is grieving over the loss of one of its two police dogs. Her name was Liberty, but she died trapped in †he back of a hot squad car. Her handler apparently forgot to put her in the police department kennel when he got off work Wednesday afternoon. “This is a difficult time for the Greenville Police Department,” Chief Dan Busken told CBS 11 News. And he adds the officer feels terrible. “He’s devastated, and I don’t know if that term is even strong enough.”

Ironically, the officer, Jeff Gore, created the K-9 unit 11-years ago. He raised Liberty from a pup. A bloodhound, she was used for search and rescue, which is why she was kenneled. The other dog, Ceiko, is a drug sniffing German Shepherd, and goes home with its handler because they get called out at all hours.

He should be charges with negligent homicde! If a citizen was to kick or hit a police dog they would be charged with assualt and so on! These guys beat their chest about how they are partners yet things like this happen.

The other day the LA Times had a story of a ladie who's dog died because she left him in the car with the windows up while she was shopping and she was arrested for it. I doubt the cop was arrested though.

Now to see if the officer gets charged with animal cruelty like a lot of normal people would.

Not to mention the fact that if a civilian were to do the same exact thing, they would most likely be charged with (if they were lucky, involuntary) homicide of a police officer.

But, this guy has a badge, so somehow that makes it different.

I hate to be this guy, as I respect the rule of law and try my very best to adhere to all the laws that do exist, regardless of if I agree with them or not, but does anyone here actually have a story about a time that a cop helped them out, kept them from being harmed or kept them from having their personal property stolen, vandalized etc? I'd be willing to bet that the large majority of people here, or anywhere for that matter don't have such a story. It's not that I dislike cops, they just don't seem to be able to do much to actually prevent crime/wrongdoings from actually happening. :2 cents:
