You need to look up what the word "optional" means. And yes, it was very much optional.

You need to back and look. It was not optional, it was skippable. Optional does not mean it will still happen but you won't see it. It means it will not happen at all.

So as a guy who REALLY likes Riley, i kinda "agree" with the anger(not the homophombia) but i think it's misplaced, I think what happen is the same as why NTR became such a hated tag here, Riley became really popular with a certain fanbase namely the "Boy-Love" group, who saw Riley's fine little twink ass(still not better than the twin in pre-reboot twisted world tho) and started supporting the game in droves and asking for "more Riley" as they subbed, which caused the dev to feel the need to acquiesce to the demand since that's what the big money subs wanted, which pissed off the lower teir subs(who probably reported his game let's just be real here) as revenge, sort of how NTR fans can and will invade games as high teir support demand their kink get added to the project and inturn alienate the old fans who start rioting in the comments (get banned) then come to places like here(f95) and continue to rage and piss everyone off(leading to the "Vanilla Fag" insult becoming common...the irony isn't lost on me) because they wont stop and it ultimantly kills the game either do to the toxic fanbase rioting and turning people off of the game or the dev feeling like the toxic fans where right and they hated what the game became and they kill it them selves, which again is sorta what i think happened here(this thread), OG fans saw Riley getting more and more screen time, saw his story(his blossuming glorius twinkness and the rich bitch) start to take over the whole game, and the girls, get pushed further and further back and they attack the game and dev rather than drowning out the support that made the shift happen, hell as much as i love Riley and was wondering if he was gonna stay a boy or Transition to a "girl" (mc being a doctor made me suspect this plot line btw), i also wanted to see at least some "good" progress with the girls, also i still wanna know if MC killed that girl on the beach with his dick or not... she wasn't moving or making sounds once he was done... questions Lmao,
Yeah, I think anytime a dev changes an already-established game/story to satisfy any particular niche sub-group of fans (or complainers) - whether it involves kinks I like or kinks I don't like - it tells me 2 things:

1) Most importantly, the dev is too soft to survive and complete a good, consistent game in the harsh petri-dish of the internet, where you need a strong artistic vision AND the ability to tune out a lot of negativity and attacks from little boys who delusionally think every game should cater to their individual tastes and go ballistic when the real world intrudes on that carefully crafted alternative reality in their heads. Even if the changes are ones I like personally, the dev has already waved the white flag by making them, so I know more major changes are inevitable and that the game is probably no longer worth the time to keep close track of. Either I don't like the changes just made, or I do like them but know with 100% certainty that the weak dev will make more changes eventually that I won't like.

2) The community will quickly devolve into mostly angry posts by fans of the original & fans of the changes, and the few thoughtful posts that are worth reading will be buried and hard to find, making the thread a good candidate to UnWatch.

I think that devs of games often panned as "boring" or "vanilla" may often deserve more praise than they ever get for not caving to the squeakiest wheels and instead sticking with their original story ideas in the face of a lot of negativity. I have infinitely more respect for devs who can do that then those who change course at the first light breeze they encounter. (y) [And a lot of those negative descriptions of those games being "boring: or "vanilla" may just be players who tried to push the dev to cater to their kinks but failed and are just bitter.]
