Hirschsprung Disease is a rare birth defect in babies where part of the large intestine is unable to remove waste materials properly, which can lead to intestinal blockage in the newborn. This 3D animation shows how doctors can correct Hirschsprung Disease in an infant by removing sections of the large intestine or colon. Before surgery, it is important to irrigate the intestine with water so the stool will not become blocked, causing painful gas bloating in the baby.

My baby boy has hirschsprugs. It has not been a easy road he was diagnosed a couple months ago. He had a colostomy done a month ago and today we were told he his ready for his pull through surgery. He will be turning 1 on April 3. It's so sad and not fair that babies have to go through this. But parents don't let the doctors turn you away and make you feel like your crazy if you feel like your child is having this symptoms ask your doctor for a biopsy. It took us 9 months of ER visits till a doctor finally listened to us. Stay strong and keep fighting

My son went 11 yrs of his life dealing with constipation issues that got worse over time. We went to several GI docs before they finally diagnosed my son with hirshprungs. He almost died from entercoloitis in the hospital. He had to get a colostomy for 7 mths of his life and a foot of instestine removed. he just had his pull through a month ago and had to spend the whole month in the hospital. Because of complications. This disease is nothing to play with. I wish i had heard of it when he was a baby i would have made them do a biopsy then!

I do have fairly bad heartburn but I manage that by staying away from foods that cause it such as chocolate, oily food such as any kind of chips; taco meat; etc, spicy foods (although i love spicy foods), bananas, ice cream. I guess am a little lactose intolerant but that's because I wasn't able to eat much of anything with milk in it as a child. I am 42 years old, I had Hirschprung in my childhood, this had a similar surgery but that was back in the 80s there wasn’t laser surgery. Thanks to God, my mother who took me to the hospital almost everyday for two years ! and the doctors, I have a normal life now. At the age, of 22 I realized my large intestine didn’t feel comfortable digesting red meat so I quitted that and now I’m vegetarian and don’t have any constipation problems at all, after suffering 22 years of constant constipation. I guess faith, early diagnosis, the surgery and quitting meat helped me to have a normal life. God is amazing!

I’m 24, when I was younger I could go to the bathroom. As I’ve gotten older, it’s gotten harder for me to use the bathroom. Basically, I pass stool only once a week (sometimes one and a half weeks) which I’ve tried fiber, laxatives, drinking more water, etc. Nothing has helped.. it’s gotten worse so now I’m having to make an appointment to see a GI doctor. I was in the bathroom two weeks ago due to a partial intestinal blockage. The pain from the blockage was indescribable. I was absolutely paralyzed from how bad it hurt, I almost fainted on the floor and I was sweating so bad and I even vomited from the pain. It has been terrifying, because I know what not passing stool can do, it can kill o you. I don’t really want surgery but I can’t live the rest of my life with the fear and worries of a blockage.

I would assume a colostomy bag would be placed at that point. A patient who lacks motility in only the left upper quadrant of his large intestine (around where it bends) for instance- would need laxatives daily and enemas to manage the motility and keep the poop moving though. However, if it were to get worse, the next step would be a procedure in which they would resect only the section that lacks motility- and reconnect the healthy colon on each side to create a whole functioning colon. It is risky due to the risk of the colon rejecting itself causing the colon to rapidly die - which would be way worse than just a section lacking motility (the nerves to contract and move poop through) It’s a tricky situation.

    • @HopeofGlory-qx4lk

Yes, a procolectomy would be performed and the patient would have a ileostomy bag for the rest of their life.

zap cannon I'm 24 and I hear ya! All of the missed school, surgeries, doctor visits, everything. It's a real mess. I had my first surgery for Hirschsprung's at 11 hours old. After my pull through and everything, the scar I have from it is pretty big and it almost looks like a c-section scar. Since I'm kinda chubby, it sections my tummy and I'm extremely self conscious of it.
Doctors have said to drink mineral oil mixed with apple juice and I don't really remember if that even worked, and I've even been told I'd need to take laxatives every day for the rest of my life. Maybe I'll try those Metamucil cookies, that sounds like a fun way to get fiber :P

zap cannon I have hirschbrungs too and I am eleven. When I was born I had to stay in the hospital for 9 months, until I went home with a colostomy bag for 3 years. I'm ok now but I still have throwing up issues its most likely acid reflexes.
