I mocked back pain I always thought it could be managed and my dad was exaggerating the back pain after his car accident. Until I had a car accident and was left with herniated disc's and a fractured pelvis. You really can't manage back pain. Being on my feet for more than an hour is brutal pain to the point I can't move my legs.. the only moment of release I had was when I got epidural and couldn't feel my back.

Su!side. I thought it was super stupid that someone would end it all. Then my depression got worse and those thoughts started
Never made fun of other people for having them again

kind of related, for me it was depression symptoms. when people said they didn't have enough energy to get out of bed or feed their pets or whatever I used to think "How do you not have energy? Just get up, someone's depending on you."
until I started exhibiting them and legitimately could not make myself do a darn thing even necessary stuff like eat. if breathing were a conscious activity I'd probably be too tired to do that

Mental health issues. Not that I thought people were exaggerating it but rather I didn’t have an idea how bad it could be until I experienced it myself.

People can't wrap their heads around how gaslighting can effect it until they've experienced it. People think abuse only means physical until they have to experience the former

Kidney stones are no joke. Definitely top tier pain experience.

Having talked to women who have had kids and kidney stones they’ve all said they’d rather have another kid than a kidney stone

Kidney stones are supposed to be in the top five most painful medical conditions. I had one of the other ones (ovarian torsion), and because of the godawful intense pain level, they thought it was kidney stones at first.
At least surgery fixed my issue. But now I’m afraid of ever getting kidney stones, because I had no idea they could be that bad. I had always thought it was just one of the normal, annoying things that can happen as you get older.

Likewise for gout. I had a one off bout of it in my foot last year and it was on a whole different level of pain to anything I've ever experienced. I was screaming in pain for half an hour at a time, and nothing would make it go away, just had to ride it out.
This made me realise I'd be hopeless in a torture situation 😅

The heaviness of one’s chest. Constant shoulder/Upper back and spine pain, bras can leave indents and dark marks in your shoulders. You slouch more than you realize , you just lean forward from the weight of hold up 10-15 pounds of flesh and fat. Bras are expensive. The more support you need the better the fabric needs to be. Fuck having bigger chest

That constant pain thing. I had a tooth ache nonstop for three months, I couldn't even sleep. I was so miserable that ibuprofen was all that could help and even then for five hours at most. I actually started crying when it went away that I could just feel relief

For me it was when people would tell me that "your college days are gonna fly by." I graduated highschool in 2020 so 18yr old found it hard to believe. One gap year and the rest of college later here i am about to graduate saying, "ah, yeah, they weren't wrong" 💀

Re: Story 33 -- Yes, a d infected tooth can kill you. If you have a toothache, that's not normal. Get it checked out. Dentists today will give you as many shots of Novocaine (actually lidocaine) as you want/need, it won't be painful. If you let it go too long, it's only going to get worse and MUCH more expensive/complicated to fix.
If you don't have insurance, check around with your local dentists' offices about co-ops for the uninsured. My co-op allowed me to get a $2000 crown I needed for a few hundred bucks. Plus I get free cleanings, exams and X-rays.

...depression: I just thought it was extreme sadness, chronically, never feeling happy. Then I had an epiphany when I was 16 (I'm 25 now) and realised, oohhhhh THAT'S why it was a battle for me to do quite literally anything (even if it benefited me), why I had panic attacks going outside, why I kept having s u i c i d a l thoughts, and why I actually tried to end it twice when I was 12. Yes I'd be sad every now and then, but I'd also be happy too sometimes so it wasn't chronic. Turns out, depression is soo much more than just being sad. Who woulda thought.

Story 39 is kinda scaring me because this fall I'm going to college for a Bachelor's degree in Veterinary Technology, to get me closer to becoming a zookeeper, so I really hope I won't get experiences like that. 😳

RE: Story 38 (and ALL mental health): Health insurance offered in the USA covers mental health as well as physical health (thanks, Obama!). This includes “government insurance” or Medicaid.
Now the problem is that this doesn’t mean there’s a mental health provider in your area, or that you like them, or that they’re in your network. Don’t ask how I know this.

Contractions. So many people always said how they are just more intense period like cramps, but because I had never experienced period cramps, i had nothing to compare it to. When people who had genuinely bad Contractions said so, I thought they were exaggerating. Then I had them and OUCH.
