A reminder that trust can be a really tough issue to deal with in their world. The latest example is Draka but luckily, she had help.

Schmidt has an important role this arc along with the Heretical Liberation Front by the looks of it. Draka has been continuing making appearances but I hope she trust herself more than others from now on.

One of my fave episodes. Rest in piss to Draka’s uncle, the scummiest dude in the series.

Nahhh man the way my heart was beating when the Bishop asked Draka to hand over the book after she’d somehow managed to talk herself out of the immediate bad situation.. then one of the HLF slicing the church official’s arms off before the OP holy shit what a sequence

Redditor(atheist) meets reformation era Protestant. That carriage conversation was the funniest part of the show so far. The look on Schmidt face when Draka said she just straight up doesn’t believe in God had me dying. They were doing so well bonding over hating the church up to that point 😂 one of the best philosophical debates we’ve seen in the show though. The big takeaway is that even though they can’t agree on a lot, they’re not in a rush to burn Draka at the stake for disagreeing. Obviously because she’s valuable having memorized the book, but Protestants are more open to diverse opinions as well.

We’re essentially about to get a front row seat for the information revolution powered by Gutenberg’s invention of the printing press which finally made information and literature available to the masses. The Church thrived on keeping people uninformed and the low to non existent education of the average person. No more. “It’s only when diverse opinions gather in the open that reason is protected” Academy mentioned!! Fuck, I love seeing an actual historical anime. This is gonna be fun.

My jaw was on the floor with the leader reveal, I kept wondering who was gonna be. Maybe Badeni’s old buddy from the church?? My GOAT Jolenta is back!!! Can’t wait to see more of her and learn what she’s been up to all these years. Did she ever see Nowak again??

Great ep

Jolenta. We're so back. She's the leader. What a nice surprise.

Other than that, looks like Draka will be the one to make that book a reality for them because of her memory of the contents of the book. Two different ideologies clashed in this episode but a talk about this subject so openly was such a nice change rather than just being hung for even saying something about it. Draka played her moves with a big brain. Good going for her.

We're going to make sure the freedom of information stays intact. That's their goal. Can't wait to see what challenges they're gonna face in this battle of beliefs.

So the belief that God is everywhere is call Omnipresence

I'm glad this episode has a civilized talk where people can speak their mind without getting arrested, tortured, and burnt alive, but the visual is still as dark as ever!

Ok Draka's scum Uncle is dead just like that. Also really love their reaction to meeting their first Atheist. I guess the idea of no god is far worse than Heliocentrism.

Draka better remember everything in that book though since she fucking burned it. Bold move. Anyways though WE GOT JOLENTA AGAIN!! I KNEW SHE WAS THE LEADER!!!

Ahhhhh nah this combo will be undefeated... I hope lols. But nah, my girl Jolenta looks so grown now.

Nice to switch it up after three back-to-back male protags to get two female protags at once. Really breaking that shitty norm that people have of women in this show.

That opening sequence was really amazing, so draka is about to hand over to book and in her mind hold out hope for Antoni to maybe... BOOM handshot, cut to the OP. That was a masterful twist on a twist.

Draka only card to play was the book & I expected her to burn to book sooner and maybe see Antoni reaction.

Its a bit wierd how Schmidt gets out of the carriage to praise the morning sun and the next time they get out of the carriage it is already night.

Atleast one of the trash died but one fled. Draka and Schmitt's belief clashes but their intentions align, mass producing the book which Draka initially wanted to do and so does the liberation group. The sun bathing scene was cool. Also Jolenta's back. I was wondering who the leader was and it was her.

The image of Schmidt praising the sun while Frei just vibes on the side cracks me up for some reason.

The commanding presence post-timeskip Jolenta had in her ~20 seconds of screentime was unreal. She truly is Nowak's daughter.

The world is changing, and a clash of ideas is met with civility.

Certainly one of the more interesting philosophical debates was seen in this episode, with Draka meeting Schmitt. It shows how much the world has changed that two people of vastly differently viewpoints can disagree, but still coexist and get along. Draka has made herself useful though by being the exclusive beholder of the book's information. Not really surprised that Jolenta is the leader behind the Heretical Liberation Front, but I'm glad to see her back, and I'll be interested to see how she has changed since the last time we saw her.

I absolutely love this show. Not relying on visual spectacle, fully being carried by conversation and story. Had a feeling that Jolenta would be connected to the group after beimg wronged by the church so many times.

One less scum in the world, goodbye Dhruv, we won't miss you.

Even though the episode took place entirely in a wagon, it was great, and the ideological debate between Draka and Schmitt was a lot of fun. Schmitt "accepted" that Draka is an atheist, well, as long as she's still useful 😅. I love how this anime shows different points of view, and even if they are opposites, there are things I agree with. Personally, I agree with Schmitt's point that humanity can never truly understand God. The Bible is proof of this, as it contains only human interpretations and not God's own words. It should be considered blasphemous that many "Christians" believe they understand God. If God exists, he has his own laws and thoughts which must be vastly different from ours, given his absolute power.

Anyway, Jolenta is back, I assumed it was her but I'm still surprised and happy to see her again. I'm curious to know what Draka will do now that Jolenta's mission coincides with her goal of profiting from the books, even if Draka's motive is purely monetary.

Just like that by simply burning that book, the credit of the works of Rafal and most of the "heretics", are lost to time. Looks like Potoski is never getting his 10% commission now...
If Draka got photographic memory, she better be asking for a higher commission

I didn't expect a man to have spent his whole life weaseling his way out of situations like this to survive, suddenly getting merked by sheer chance. You could even say it was fate....

I see the group's philosophy is very similar to Calvinist ideals. This interaction was one of the most interesting discussions so far. She almost messed up saying she didn't believe in God. Being an Agnostic, I thought he was going to lash out and beat the shit out of Draka lol.

A surprise I saw coming from a mile away, but I don't care JOLENTA IS BACK! LET'S GOOO!!

It's only similar to Calvinism in the way Schmidt believes in absolute fate but otherwise he seems to totally reject the Christian God and its doctrine. He thinks of God as one with Nature, so something closer to Spinosa's Deus sive Natura.

JOLENTA IS BACK! I REPEAT, JOLENTA IS BACK!

The best character is back, and she's now stronger than ever, being the leader of the liberation force. This revelation wasn't really surprising, most of us were already expecting it, especially when episode 16 Schmitt asked if "Oczy" or "Badeni" were mentioned in the book. Only Jolenta would know that.
After Rafal's death, the generation skip led to not actually have any character from that first chapter in the 2nd chapter, with the exception of Nowak, that was more of an antagonist. But this time around, we have a character from the past generation in this new chapter! It will be interesting to see if she will honor Oczy and Badeni's names!

I'm also really curious to see how much Jolenta as changed, after what we saw in episode 14, and if she ever got in contact with her father (also, is Nowak even alive at this point?).

I really liked Draka smooth talking the Bishop, and this scene also shows how intelligent she really is. Fortunately, the liberation force appeared before she had to hand over Oczy's book. But it was quite surprising to see her burn the book. However, it was an excellent idea, since this way they couldn't kill her, and she could continue her objective of profiting from the book. It was hinted last episode that Draka probably has photographic memory, so it's clear she will remember the book, almost word by word.
Also, the uncle died as collateral damage. Can't say I'm sad about it. He had it comming. But Draka still felt sad about it, which is understandable, since he was her only alive family member.

The majority of the episode was a discussion of 2 different ideologies, and I must say it was quite interesting. I personally found Draka's perspective quite interesting. Orb has always done a great job at exposing the characters ideas.
However, I must say that, from all characters from Orb so far, Schmitt's perspective has to be the hardest to fully understand. This episode helped explaing it better than what was showned in episode 16, but I still find this view a bit contradictory, and that's why I can't fully understand it, but I suppose we'll get to know Schmitt better in the following episodes.

I suppose there will be some conflict between Draka and Jolenta, since they might share quite different ways of seeing the world, but I feel like they will end up getting along well.

Really curious for the next episode, that will feature JOLENTA! It does seem this 3rd chapter is going to be about publishing the theory made in the 2nd chapter, from the beliefs that were passed on in the 1st chapter.

Man, Schmidt just casually became the best character in this show for me, and I loved Rafal and Badeni.
Not agreeing with everything he says of course, but the way he carries his faith and how unintentionally hilarious he is; he'll be an unforgettable character for me.

  • The arm cutting scene is lame.
  • Schmitt is full of contradiction. He hates logic and technology, but he utilizes them.
  • Liberation of information. Badeni mentioned it already many years ago. "It's a good thing that ordinary people can't read/write letters. or the world becomes full of trash." He talked about books, but the equivalent now would be smartphones and circulation of info. Some people are confused by false info, and populism is rife. One of the defects of democracy is both wise man and idiot have the same weight on voting.
  • Draka's hate phrase against the sun resembles the lyrics of Time again.
  • The face design of Jolenta is good. The manga version doesn't have much trace of her younger face.

WE ARE SO BACK. JOLENTA IS BACK. Absolute cinema
One of the best episodes not because of the action but due to its content. It is so nice to see a philosophical "debate" in an episode and have a rather respectful engagement between both sides. Even though I felt that the previous episode was somewhat bland and wasn't that impressed by Draka's introduction, this episode managed to change that perception from the very beginning. Although she is not a scholar nor has been to school, she manages to have a knack for logic and cleverness and delivers her point in a punching way even in life-threatening moments.
Schmidt is also a very interesting character and his scene when he exits to greet the sunrise was a personal highlight along with his funny expressions at what Draka was saying. Although we don't get as much info about the remainder of the trio, they all go well together and I am looking forward to their development.

But of course, Jolenta's return brought this together. It was expected, but actually seeing it was such a relief. The only remaining knot is Nowak's fate: surely, he's changed over time and he has to reunite with his daughter, please. Maybe he'll have his revelation just as Count Piast had towards the end of his life (or maybe I'm just blabbering).

Yeah!! As expected, Jolenta is related to them, and is even their leader.

The forbidden knowledge of heliocentric that has been strongly opposed from Rafal's time, even long before Rafal researched it, to Jolenta's time now... I guess it's a very long journey... so I hope this very long journey will start to find light. There's no Nowak who will kill the heretics anymore, right? Haha

Draka really has demonstrated that she has arguments to carry out debates without having too much unnecessary internal monologue. Not only the conversation with the bishop made him ponder about his arguments about the power it will have the people in the future but the debate surrounding whether God exists or not as well as the mission commended by Jolenta was quite intriguing to listen to. Oh, that's right, turns out it was who sent Schmidt and the others after the back and she looks mroe firm and gloomier from back then. I'm sure in the next few episodes we'll get to see what she's been up to since her escape.
