Benjamin Roca (born 20 October, 1982), known professionally as ProleteR, is a French multi-instrumentalist, producer, and beat-maker from the city of Toulouse. He is best known for his platinum-selling record 'April Showers' alongside his remixes of artists including Degiheugi, Chinese Man, Smokey Joe and the Kid, Wax Tailor, and Boogie Belgique.
ProleteR has performed at music festivals and international venues including Zenith Paris in France[1], Belgium's Esperanzah, and Koko in London, England, alongside acts including Caravan Palace, Parov Stelar,[2] Deluxe,[3] Gramatik[4] and l'Entourloop, and now performs with a live band for the Swing Hop Party tour.
Career
[edit]ProleteR has been described as a "pioneer[5]" of the swing hop music scene.
In 2011, ProleteR released his debut album 'Curses From Past Times'.[6] The album gained significant international attention, establishing ProleteR as a prominent figure in the swing hop scene.
The lead single from the album, 'April Showers' achieved widespread success and in 2023 the track was certified platinum.[7] 'April Showers' has accumulated millions of streams on platforms including Spotify. The song went viral on Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube, with particular success in Europe, North America and Asia.
In 2025, ProleteR announced a new album, "Temperamental Cats," set to release on March 14, 2025, alongside a new tour. He is accompanied by a brass band featuring Adrien Dumont on trumpet, Alexandre Galinié on clarinet and sax, and Baptiste Techer on trombone. The Swing Hop Party tour features ProleteR and the band performing his original music with samples recreated live by jazz musicians.
Personal life
[edit]ProleteR was born on 20 October 1982 in Toulouse, to a French family, as the youngest of three brothers. He began experimenting with music at eight years old, playing his dad's drum set before teaching himself guitar as a teenager.[8] He then performed with French punk rock bands in Toulouse, France, before transitioning to music production at the age of 20.
In 2003, ProleteR moved to Strasbourg to pursue a degree in sociology. While studying in the city, he got his first drum machine and started learning music production. At the time, he produced music under the name 'Far Station'. After that he settled in Paris for a few years to study Journalism in Levallois-Perret. Following that he moved back to Toulouse and worked in a factory.
The name ProleteR is a play on the French word for 'proletarian' (prolétarien). In a 2013 interview, ProleteR said: "I chose this name because I think it fits well myself and my current situation. I didn't choose it because of its political meaning, only for its popular meaning here in France. A 'prolo' is a folk from the lower class, a kind of a galley slave[9]."
