Just finished NGE and loved it. Are the rebuild movies worth watching? Do they add anything new to the story? Thanks in advance.

Must watch. The story is different and the movies are better in some aspects.

Other aspects are winning in the main series, in particular the charm of the angels is much superior in the original series.

they aren't as great as the tv series and movie, but still definitely worth a watch. before watching the rebuild you need to watch the end of evangelion movie. the whole point of the rebuild movies was to reimagine the story, not to replace it. during the tv show Hideaki Anno was very depressed especially after the backlash from the last 2 episodes. so these rebuild movies were made when he was in a better mental state. additionally the 4th movie's ending ties up all three endings (tv show, movie, and rebuild) for a nice finale. sorry if this didn't help or made you more confused

The story is similar for the beginning but branches out after second completely. Definitely give it a watch but i would recommend you waiting some time as the first movie is essentially the same thing so it would probably be boring if you still remember most of the tv series

@Murko644 Thanks for the recommendation. I'll take a break before watching the movies. I haven't even watched End of Evangelion yet, so I'll probably watch that first.

The end of evangelion is an ending to the original series, it has nothing to do with the rebuilds.

Absolutely, purely due to the music alone.

I don't like the final movie myself and there are many reasons for that. But as a whole, the tetralogy does justify its existence with its leveraging of newer animation tech, vastly different story, and 7 HOURS worth of new music.

Eh, i don't think you have to wait to watch it. I know everyone wants to believe this about their favorite anime, but this IS actually a story that lends itself to rewatches. So i would recommend watching 1.0 to appreciate the details in the story more.

If you do want to speedrun it, you could skip 1.0 almost entirely except for its last scene and just start with 2.0. That would be the most time efficient way to watch the whole thing.

In my humble opinion, the Rebuilds are the best of Evangelion. The first two are very similar to the series, but then the story changes.

I consider Neon Genesis Evangelion to be my favorite anime, and I found myself in the same dichotomy as you after finishing the original series and the movie. I was skeptical about the Rebuilds at first, but although my favorite ending is the one from the original movie, I think the Rebuilds are definitely worth watching.

The first movie is almost the same as the original series, just with a few changes. So, if you want, you can look them up and skip directly to the second movie. The second movie greatly diverges from the original story, and the third and forth movies are completely different from it.
The third movie had some issues, in my opinion, but it is still great, and the last movie is straight-up a masterpiece. If you liked the original series, you will love this one.

For me, these are the top endings of Evangelion in order:

1. The End of Evangelion (movie)
2. Rebuilds ending
3. Original TV show ending

I recommend it. The rebuilds is like a different reimagining of the series. After End of Evangelion, I would definitely say it’s worth the watch.

yeah definitely watch end of eva, then the rebuild movies. even with a break in between if you need it.

i also recommend the manga, the art is beautiful, and it adds some interesting story elements on top of having an alternate ending.

The Rebuilds are great. They're actually a sequel (even if it doesn't seem like at first) and 3.0+1.0 is the true ending of the franchise

As someone who has not watched the Rebuilds, I'll be the voice of caution to me while I wouldn't call Evangelion perfect I do think it achieves its main goals and conveys important concepts to the audience because to me End Of Evangelion IS an irreplacable experience I see no point in watching the Rebuild films to me there isn't a good reason to ruin something that was already good enough.

I love the original series ending and still prefer it. However the rebuilds are such a great take on Evangelion and offer a lot to the story.

My friend, do yourself the favor and watch these! Each one ads more to the last, and by the final one (3.0+1.0) you will surely shed a tear—be it of happiness or sadness.

They are pretty solid, but aren't as good as the tv show imo. The only thing better are the fights and the animations.

The Rebuild films are fine if you want more NGE content. The movies take a different direction than the OG series and that's fine for some people. if you're content with just the series and End of Evangelion you're not missing out on much.

NGE being inspired by Go Nagai’s devilman is truly iconic
